Jan lived in West Sussex as a child and her first introduction to the natural world came when her father took her walking on the South Downs, showing her wildflowers, birds and insects. She moved to Cambridge with her family in 1988 to undertake a BSc in Environmental Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University (then a polytechnic)). She followed this with a PGCE at Darwin College, University of Cambridge. Jan didn't pick up a camera until 2006 whilst living/working in Italy with her husband Nigel Cassidy.
Based in south east Cambridgeshire, Jan currently works as a professional photographer and teacher delivering workshops and courses for women. See Workshops/Courses.

She is keen to support artists working in her local community, with opportunities to collaborate and exhibit their work. In 2014 she set up the West Wratting Arts Collective and they held their first exhibition in October. The exhibition was a great success and Jan is currently organising another for October 2015. Please see Exhibitions for more information.
